Eels – Meet the Eels: Essential Eels Vol. 1 1996-2006 DVD (Geffen Records)

phpthumb_generated_thumbnailjpg.jpeg Of the dozen music videos offered on the Essential Eels DVD, perhaps three are worth scrutiny, study. The others are merely, as the Radiohead collection from 1997 reminded us, television commercials for the band. Watching videos like “Rags to Rags” and “Last Stop: This Town”, one has to wonder what the hell the images one is seeing have to do with the music itself. I envision each video’s director explaining in vapid detail what one thing symbolizes or means and how it is connected to the song; and I envision myself disbelieving each director.

Aloha (Live at the Bug Jar. Rochester, NY.)

img_0017.JPG Aloha launched their latest tour – extending to Virginia and Illinois – March 10 at the Bug Jar in Rochester, NY. The four band members played almost all of the new EP, Light Works, to an enthusiastic Monday night crowd, which tried its best to respect everyone else’s cramped space while also boogying in some manner.

The Trainbomber (Ike Reilly single from forthcoming LP)

images.jpeg Ike Reilly debuted a new song on his MySpace page this week entitled “The Trainbomber.” The song, from Ike Reilly’s forthcoming Poison the Hit Parade LP, is a tale of domestic, populist anxiousness and woe; similar, in sound, to The Ike Reilly Assassination’s “Valentine’s Day in Juarez” from 2007’s We Belong to the Staggering Evening. (We are unsure, as of yet, what has happened to The Assassination and, puns aside, do hope for their well being.)
